Five Tips to Consider when Moving

What are some important considerations when moving abroad? Have you ever had to relocate? We can all agree that moving or relocating is hard work. Whether you are moving from one part of the country to another. Or from one part of the world to another. Today we will look at some documents that will make for a smoother, more successful transition.

Documents

  • Birth certificate
  • Marriage certificate
  • Divorce papers
  • Deed poll
  • Titles
  • Immunization cards for everyone
  • Social security number for your home country
  • All your bank accounts and passwords
  • Phone numbers – print off the listing of all your contacts along with their phone numbers. While you are in transit, you may not have access to your phone – for whatever reason. You would need to have those numbers. If your gmail account is linked to your phone, then you will be able to print off your contacts listing.

License

Check out the drivers license requirement for the new country. Will you be able to drive using your current driver’s license, if so, for how long? Also, which side of the road do they drive on….hint, hint

Passport

Ensure that your passport is current and valid. Moreover, the passport needs to be valid for six months or more.

Bank account –

Merge or close some of your bank accounts. No need to have five (5) or more accounts especially as you will be relocating to a new country. Furthermore, there are fees attached to these accounts.  Whatever else you do you must sign up for online banking. While you are at it, include the indemnity form which will allow you to give the bank instructions over email or other electronic means. Failure to have all your documentation, may result in you needing the documents sent to you by courier which will be an additional expense.

Online bill payments

Sign up to get your bank statements and utility bills online. By doing so, you will not be dependent on relatives or friends to ensure that your bills are paid. You will be able to get your bills, login to your online banking platform and take care of your business yourself. While the feeling of independence that comes from managing your affairs is immeasurable, remember to keep connected with your loved ones back home. Do not forget the people who helped you along your journey.
