Hey there, it’s Uylander!
Can you believe it’s already December? Time really does fly! Now that the US elections are behind us, we can all take a deep breath and focus on what’s ahead. I hope you’ve been crushing the goals you set for yourself earlier this year—remember, progress is made in baby steps!

For many of us, December also means exams. And for post-secondary students, that can mean extra stress and anxiety as we prepare to wrap up the semester. But don’t worry! I’m here to share some tried-and-true tips to help you conquer your final exams with confidence.
1. Tackle Missed Assignments First
Before you dive into exam prep, make sure all your assignments are in and accounted for. You want to head into exam season with solid coursework grades to reduce stress and lessen the pressure on your final exam performance. If you’re behind on any assignments, reach out to your instructors—there’s no harm in asking if they’d accept late submissions. The worst they can say is “no,” but at least you tried!
2. Make Your Textbook Your Best Friend
I know it’s tempting to rely solely on PowerPoint slides, but let’s be honest—there’s often way more to the material than what’s covered in class. Your textbook is packed with valuable information that could make or break your understanding of key concepts. Don’t skip it! Take the time to read through the chapters and fill in any gaps that slides might have missed. Trust me, your textbook will be your best study buddy this month.
3. Master Your Study Skills
From experience, one of the best things you can do is to really understand the material, rather than just memorizing it. When you get a solid grasp on what you’re learning, reviewing it will feel more like a refresher than a last-minute cram session. Use study cards to boost retention—Anki is an awesome tool for making flashcards. And don’t forget the power of writing things out! There’s a special connection between your hand and brain when you write, which helps information stick better.
4. Time Management is Everything
Create a study schedule that works for you. Take a look at the courses you need to review, break down the chapters you need to cover, and allocate time based on how much you need to study for each subject. Be realistic about your time and try to stick to the schedule. And remember: schedule breaks! Overworking yourself isn’t productive, so give yourself time to recharge.
5. Prioritize Self-Care
It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle, but remember: your body and brain need care to perform at their best. Make sure you’re fueling yourself with nutritious meals and staying hydrated. Your brain needs energy to process all that information. Also, try to get enough sleep. I know time is tight, but don’t skimp on rest—your body needs it to function properly, and it’ll help you perform better on exams.
When studying, don’t forget to take short breaks to avoid burnout. A quick 10-minute walk or just stepping outside for fresh air can do wonders for your focus.
6. Double-Check Your Exam Schedule
This is a simple but essential tip: review your exam schedule. I’ve seen students miss exams or show up late simply because they didn’t check the details. Some have even ended up at the wrong exam room! You don’t want to add that extra stress to your plate, so double-check the times and locations for each of your exams.
As a fellow student, I totally get how stressful this time of year can be. But trust me, you’ve got this! With these tips in your back pocket, you’re well on your way to finishing the semester strong. And if you ever need a little extra motivation or someone to talk to, I’m here for you.
Good luck, and let’s finish this semester strong!
